The fastest car in GTA 5 story mode is the Truffade Z-Type, with a tested top speed of around 127 mph. In GTA Online, the fastest car by top speed is the Grotti Cartuccia GT at 139 mph, and on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and the enhanced PC version, a Bravado Banshee GTS with Hao’s Special Works upgrades reaches 172.5 mph.
Those are real measured speeds, not the stat bars the game shows you. Here are the full rankings for each mode, what the cars cost, and why the fastest car is not always the best one to buy.
What Is the Fastest Car in GTA 5 Story Mode?
| Rank | Car | Tested top speed | Story mode price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Truffade Z-Type | About 127 mph | $10,000,000 |
| 2 | Truffade Adder | About 126 mph | $1,000,000 |
| 3 | Vapid Pisswasser Dominator | About 125 mph | Reward for winning the Stock Car Races |
| 4 | Pegassi Monroe | About 123 mph | $490,000 |
| 5 | Dewbauchee Massacro (Racecar) | About 123 mph | $385,000 |
The Z-Type takes first place by a small margin, but at ten million dollars it is poor value. The Adder is the car most players actually want. It is almost as fast, costs a tenth as much, and you do not even need to buy it. One spawns parked on Portola Drive in Rockford Hills, outside the clothing store, and you can simply take it and store it in a garage.
The Fastest Cars in GTA Online by Top Speed
| Rank | Car | Tested top speed |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Grotti Cartuccia GT | 139.00 mph |
| 2 | Grotti Veleno GT | 138.75 mph |
| 3 | Bravado Banshee GTS | 138.00 mph |
| 4 | BF Weevil Custom | 137.50 mph |
| 5 | Progen Luiva | 136.25 mph |
| 6 | Ocelot Pariah | 136.00 mph |
| 7 | Grotti Itali RSX | 134.50 mph |
These figures are for fully upgraded cars driven in a straight line, based on the long-running tests by the GTA racing community’s best-known tester, Broughy1322. GTABase keeps the full ranked list up to date after each update. The two Grotti cars at the top arrived in the summer 2026 update, which is why older guides still name the Banshee GTS or the Pariah as number one.
Some approximate prices to help you plan: the Banshee GTS costs about $1,989,500, the Ocelot Pariah $1,420,000, the Progen Luiva $2,697,500 and the Itali RSX $3,465,000. The Weevil Custom is the bargain of the list, since it is a Benny’s conversion of a much cheaper car. Prices change during weekly sales, so check Legendary Motorsport in game before you buy.
The Fastest Cars With HSW Upgrades on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC Enhanced
Hao’s Special Works is a tuning shop inside the LS Car Meet that is only available on the newer versions of the game. Its upgrades raise top speed far beyond anything on the standard list.
| Car | Top speed with HSW |
|---|---|
| Bravado Banshee GTS | 172.5 mph |
| Grotti Itali GTO Stinger TT | 168.5 mph |
| Declasse Tampa GT | 166 mph |
| Grotti Veleno GT | 164 mph |
An HSW conversion costs well over a million dollars on top of the car itself. If you play on PS4 or Xbox One, HSW is not available and the standard table above is the one that applies.
Why the In-Game Speed Bar Does Not Tell You the Fastest Car
The stat bars on the purchase websites are rough indicators that come from the game’s handling files. They do not account for gearing, drag, downforce or the way some cars gain speed over bumps and kerbs. Two cars with an identical speed bar can be several miles per hour apart on a real road. That is why players rely on timed test runs, and why this article uses those numbers.
Fastest Top Speed vs Fastest Around a Track: Which Car Should You Buy?
Top speed matters on long straights, such as highway races and getaways across the map. On a normal race circuit, acceleration, braking and cornering decide the result, and the lap-time rankings look different from the list above.
- For highway speed and bragging rights: Cartuccia GT, or Banshee GTS with HSW.
- For value: the Ocelot Pariah has been near the top for years and costs far less than the newest supercars.
- For races: check which class the race uses, then look at lap times for that class, not top speed.
- For missions and free roam: armour and weapons often matter more than a few extra miles per hour.
Frequently Asked Questions About the Fastest Cars in GTA 5
Is the Adder still the fastest car in GTA 5?
In story mode it is the second fastest, just behind the Z-Type. In GTA Online it was overtaken many years ago.
What is the fastest car in GTA Online without HSW?
The Grotti Cartuccia GT at 139 mph, followed closely by the Veleno GT and the Banshee GTS.
Are rocket cars faster than these?
Vehicles with rocket boosts, such as the Vigilante and the Scramjet, can exceed these speeds in short bursts. They are usually ranked separately because the boost is not a sustained top speed and they are banned from standard races.
What is the fastest vehicle of any kind in GTA Online?
Aircraft are faster than any car. On the ground, leaving rocket boosts aside, the HSW Banshee GTS has the highest tested top speed.
